Yeshivat Sussya is building a 'green', environmentally-friendly dormitory in keeping with our Sages teachings on the Book of Kohelet (Ecclesiastes).
"When G-d created Man, He placed him in the Garden of Eden and showed him all that He had created in nature and said: "Look at all my wonderful creations – they were all created for you. Take good care of them and do not destroy my world, for if you do – no-one will remain to repair the damage."
In Sussya's dormitory, students will be taught to be aware of the environment, its limited resources and the dangers facing it as part of the responsibility G-d placed on the human race. This responsibility will be developed both on a theoretical level – through in-depth learning and on a practical level in the following ways:
-
Rainfall will be stored in cisterns and not allowed to go to waste and will be used for watering gardens and flushing toilets and thus use of pumped water will be kept to a minimum.
- A double sewage system will be installed in the dormitory building and water used for showers, in sinks and for washing floors will be recycled for use in watering gardens and flushing toilets.
- The dormitory will be constructed from insulating materials which will reduce the need for electricity for heating and cooling.
- The building will be constructed taking maximum advantage of the direction of the winter sunshine and the strong afternoon winds in the summer. This, too, will reduce the needs for heating in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.
- Turbines will be installed on the dormitory roofs to collect kinetic energy and convert it to electricity to be used in the corridors and some of the bedrooms, reducing conventional electricity consumption.
- Electrical fibers on the roofs will attract and conduct natural sunlight which will be used to illuminate the bedrooms.
- Solar panels on the roofs will heat water for showers, thus significantly reducing consumption of electricity.
We hope that this 'green' dormitory will enable us to bring up a generation of G-d-fearing and well-educated Jews who are full of ideals to improve their lives and their communities, whilst taking care of the wonderful world we received from G-d and its well-being which he has entrusted to us.
